The olive tree is one of the plants that unmistakably characterizes the landscape of the entire Mediterranean area and our island. The cultivation of the olive tree in Sardinia has ancient historical origins and is lost in the mists of time.
Olive oil represents one of the fundamental elements of the "Mediterranean diet." Rich in beneficial properties, it is essential for preparing good dishes and for giving a final touch to soups, bread, meat, and other traditional dishes.
The most important cultivated olive varieties are Bosana, Pizz'e carroga, Tonda di Cagliari, Nera di Gonnos, and Semidana. Each of these varieties has characteristics that distinguish it from the others, and the absolutely high-quality oils produced can be very different from each other.
In 2007, Sardinia obtained from the European Union the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO Sardinia) for extra virgin olive oil produced in the regional territory.
This involves production control along the entire supply chain and guarantees the consumer, in addition to the origin, a higher level of quality.
