Saffron

Sardinia is the leading Italian region in the production of saffron, the expensive spice also known as red gold. The main producing town in Sardinia is San Gavino Monreale, the municipality in Campidano where I was born and spent my adolescence. I have seen the fascinating and lengthy process of preparing saffron many times. And in the month of November, you can't miss the spectacle of the countryside surrounding the town covered with small purple flowers. Saffron has an incredible aroma, unique in its kind, and is able to flavor countless first courses, main courses, desserts, and liqueurs. In 2009, it received the important PDO recognition, which brings together the saffron produced in the municipalities of San Gavino, Turri, and Villanovafranca.
